Fresh Tracks

Fresh Tracks was inspired by the Obama Administration’s commitment to connecting more young Americans to the outdoors and by the President’s trip to Alaska in the summer of 2015. This past August Fresh Tracks provided young adults from Los Angeles and Alaska with opportunity to travel together to both regions and explore diverse cultures and the outdoors, enabling each group to learn from the other, build critical leadership skills, and become even stronger advocates for their communities. Developed by Islandwood and with the help of institutions such as Sierra Club, Children & Nature Networks Natural Leaders Network, REI, Zumiez, Campion Foundation and Alaska Airlines, Fresh Tracks had an amazing, foundation building, inaugural year with plans for expansion for future generations.

Having worked with the great people at Islandwood in the past I was asked if I’d like to develop the logo for the new program - an opportunity I jumped on. After nailing down the logo I made certain to stay involved and developed all collateral pieces as well as hats, banner and t-shirts.

The images you see here are from the first leg of these young adults’ journey. The first of two days was spent here in Seattle at the iconic climbing rock at REI’s signature store and continued to the grounds of Islandwood itself for day two.

GRUB Identity, Menu & Collateral

Queen Anne Hill, the neighborhood we've called home for 17+ years has had its share of outstanding restaurants.  GRUB is no exception and indeed stands out with it's offerings of delicious classic meals prepared using fresh ingredients with a modern fusion of flavors. When I was asked to design the identity, menu and additional collateral I jumped at the opportunity.

GRUB's food preparation philosophy in combination with it's unique decor of reclaimed woods, fixtures and vintage service items provided my design inspiration. With iPhone in hand I snapped pictures of these elements as inspiration for my design.

Logos, Identities & Type

As a designer, logo development is one of the most exciting projects to take on because the goal is to convey a very specific message with only a few lines and colors. Having worked as a graphic designer for 20+ years I have designed my share of logos.  These are just a few examples.

Adobe Watermark Café Identity

I was approached by Adobe and asked to re-brand their existing Seattle campus in-house cafe - The Watermark.  The Adobe campus is located in Seattle’s eclectic Fremont neighborhood and sits on what is known as the “Fremont Cut”, part of the waterway that connects Lake Washington to the Puget Sound.  In addition to the historic Fremont draw bridge, the cut is also home to daily scullers and rowers, a unique and vibrant part of this diverse and beautiful city.

It was from this rich heritage that I drew my inspiration.

Ronix Wakeboards 2016 Product Photo Shoot & Catalog

Any project that comes along that allows me to incorporate both my photography and design skills in one is always very welcome. To control a greater degree of the look of a given project is a huge opportunity for a designer/photographer .

For the 2016 Ronix Wakeboards product catalog I was contracted to work collaboratively with the Creative Director to produce a piece that stood out. With Ronix having recently moved into an amazing and brand new facility outside of Seattle, we decided on environment shots to showcase the individual products in combination with standard studio and detail images.

In addition to shooting, processing and color correcting all the product shots, I also designed pages based on the Creative Director's direction and produced the print documents.

Water Ski And Wakeboard Canada Identity System

Having become familiar with my work in watersports for many years, I was asked by Waterski and Wakeboard Canada's governing body to redesign their collection of identities, five in all.  With a project of this magnitude I spent a lot of time talking to the WSWC Marketing Director and researching traditional Canadian design strategies. While all 5 logos fall under one umbrella, each one was to have it's own look and feel. After several rounds of concept development and refinement we had a package of identities that WSWC can take with them from here forth.

Harley-Davidson™ Regional Brochures

Western Washington's largest Harley-Davidson™ dealer, Eastside Harley-Davidson™ contracted me to develop seasonal catalogs. The history of the H-D brand is so rich and such a part of the American fabric that the opportunity to design for them was an honor.

Radar Waterskis 2016 Team Action Shoot, Product Photo Shoot & Catalog

The 2016 Radar Waterskis encapsulates what I offer as a graphic designer and photographer. I was contracted to photograph the annual team action shoot in Eastern Washington as well as all the product in the studio and then put it all together in the yearly print catalog. Additionally I designed several graphics within the line itself including stand-up paddle boards, vests, gloves, etc.

When I'm given the opportunity to combine my photography as design skills in one project I'm always inspired and this years Radar catalog was hugely satisfying. A project such as this requires a lot of organization due to constantly shifting priorities and timeframes but it's the kind of scenario I thrive on.

Additionally I worked closely with both the Creative Director and Brand Manager to develop a piece that showcases the product cleanly and concisely and uses the great photography to full effect.

HERB

HERB is all about hanging out with friends, having a good time, laughing his ass off and enjoying himself.  HERB is bright and colorful – he's not too serious about politics but damn serious about having a beach fire on Friday night.  HERB is there for you when you want to go bowling but may be too tired if you need help moving your hide-a-bed.

With the legalization of cannabis sales in Washington State there has been no shortage of start-ups looking to make their mark in this newly popular market. When Vulcan Mountain Farms called on me to develop a look for one of their brands, HERB how could I pass up the opportunity? Drawing on memories long since past as well as a desire to breath life into HERB, I created what you see here.

Humboldt County Goods

Humboldt County Goods was an idea I had for a brand/shop selling items inspired by the Humboldt Redwoods State Park in Northern California. Using these enormous and majestic trees as inspiration my goal was to develop an identity that signifies strength and individuality. As each redwood is both strong and unique they are also connected in much the same way we as individuals are. Using the strong brand seal as the centerpiece of the design I developed packaging, collateral and web based applications.

Adobe Electric Vehicle Parking Signage

Adobe Seattle asked me to create signage for their designated electric vehicle parking spots.  After some initial concepts which included lots of leaves and cars and leaves plugged into cars I decided on another route.  Digging through vintage photographs provided all the inspiration I needed.

Waterski Magazine Art Direction

Having spent nearly 15 years at the helm of a waterski manufacturer's in-house art department, I had designed hundreds of ads for Waterski Magazine.  When I was offered the job of Art Director for the industries top publication, I jumped at the opportunity. Waterski Magazine is based in Orlando, Florida but in the modern world my being based in Seattle proved to be no hurdle whatsoever.

Here is a small sample of my design work from my years spent with Waterski Magazine.

Queen Anne Elementary

Queen Anne Elementary opened it's doors to our community in 2010 and as a family we were fortunate to be there from the start.  With a young and vibrant philosophy to match the newly formed staff, I set out to design a fun identity for the school.  In the years since I have helped in all facets of the schools design and photography needs.

Bradford Lifestyles Catalog

Bradford Lifestyles asked me to put together their yearly catalog with very clear instructions, they wanted a clean design with the photography taking center stage and minimal copy. With my extensive experience designing pages loaded with images and text, it was exciting to have the opportunity to work on less "heavy-lifting" layouts. Having said that it was not without it's own challenges. The result is 68 pages of clean layouts with lots of room to breathe.

Tony Teske Photography

Designing for one's self can be a challenge as it is often difficult to please the client.  After many false starts I thought it best to let my photographs speak for themselves.  As a photographer who shoots a variety of subjects in a variety of conditions it was important have a business card that depicted my range.  The answer was to print 50 different business cards, each with it's own photograph. Ranging from high speed water-skiers, to the Seattle Seahawks and their fans, to a Cub Scout camp and beyond, each square card is thick and leaves an impression.  The simple logo was created with a typeface I designed myself and set with the clean and technical font, Klavika, a favorite of mine.  The best part of these business cards is seeing which card is chosen when I hold out several and say, "pick which one you'd like."

Hondo II

It's always great to work for friends, be they long-term or new. Hondo II are two guys I met in recent years that love to make and play music here in Seattle. I started taking pictures of their always great live sets which then led to a few show posters and eventually to an album sleeve and disk design.

CWB Wakeboards

One of the joys of what I do is meeting new people and discovering new approaches to familiar subjects. When CWB (Connelly Wakeboards) hired me to design wakeboard and boot graphics for them I was very excited. Working with the CWB Art Director was very refreshing. The creative brief was specific but open-ended in that I was given free rein to fulfill the requirements however I saw fit.  My experience with CWB is one I value very much because it taught me a new way to produce design solutions to a familiar subject, in this case wakeboard graphics and boot design.

Hyperlite Wakeboards

After 14 years working for Hyperlite Wakeboards as the Art Director I have designed over 300 wakeboard graphics. When it came time to show designs here there were far too many to choose from. Showcased here are a few of the projects I completed in my last year there as well as the ones Hyperlite contracted me for in years since I left. It was great to have the chance to continue designing for the brand I helped build for all those years.
